How to Fix Roof Paint

Using roof paint to add a little extra protection to your home is a good idea.  By repairing the paint job at least once a year, you can minimize the potential of damage done that could cause leaks and lead to some very expensive home repairs.  The task of using the roof paint is very simple and can be managed as a weekend project without a lot of trouble.

Things You Need:

  • Broom

  • Garden hose with cleaner attachment

  • Cleaning agent

  • Roof paint

  • Paintbrush, roller and tray

  • Caulk

  1. Remove debris from roof.  Use the broom to remove any loose materials on the roof, such as old fragments of limbs.

  2. Wash the roof thoroughly.  Add some cleaning agent to the cleaner attachment on the garden hose and go over the entire roof.  After cleaning, make sure to switch to plain water and rinse the roof completely.  Allow the roof area to dry for a couple of hours to dry.

  3. Inspect the roof for any damage.  Once the roof is dry, check metal panels for any signs of dents or damage.  Inject caulk into any areas that you find and allow the caulk to dry.

  4. Mix the roof pain.  Use a stick to stir the pain, making sure it is complete mixed evenly.  This will help to ensure the product is blended properly and can be used to coat the roof completely.

  5. Apply the paint.  Pour some of the paint into the tray, then use the roller to apply the product in and even coat over the entire roof.  Begin at the corner furthest from the ladder and your point of entry on the roof, then work your way back to the ladder.

  6. Check for any touchups that need to be done.  Once the base coat is dry, inspect the roof for any small nooks or crannies that may need coverage and apply some paint with the paint brush.  Once the touchups are done, apply a second coat, taking care to make sure the brush strokes go in a cross pattern to the original coat.  This strategy will add another layer of protection and allow the roof paint to last a little longer.
