How to Fix a Broken Window Seal

Most windows installed in a home will have a bead of caulking around the sides of the window to seal any air gaps. When the seal on the window begins to deteriorate it should be repaired immediately because it allows air to get into the home, which can result in a higher utility bill. This is something that you can easily repair yourself.

How to Fix a Broken Window Seal

  1. Examine the window to determine where the seal has broken on the window. Look for any gaps between the caulk and the window.

  2. Use a ruler or a measuring tape to determine the width of the gap. If it is larger than 7/8", you will need to apply fill strips in the gaps.

  3. Measure and cut the fill strips using a utility knife to the height and width of the gap.

  4. Insert the strips to the side of the window to narrow the gap.

  5. Remove the old caulking from the window seal by grabbing it with a pair of needle nosed pliers.

  6. Use a utility knife to cut the end off the new caulking tube and use a nail to puncture the seal of the tube. Insert the tube of caulking into a caulking gun and press the trigger to set the push plate.

  7. Gently press the trigger on the gun and apply a single bead of caulk down the side of the window.

  8. Dip your finger in water and run it down the bead to smooth it out.
