How to Fix a Flat Tire Using a Tire Repair Kit
Materials Needed
- Pliers
- Tire repair kit
- Locate the object and remove it with pliers. If you cannot find the object, cover the tire with soapy water and listen for escaping air. Not only will this help you find the object but it will also help you locate other holes as well. Avoid repairing holes that are in the sidewall. If there are damages in the sidewall, the tire will have to be replaced.
- Tear open the tire repair kit. It should have a rasp tool, plugs, an insertion tool and cement.
- Put the rasp tool in the hole. Pull the tool in and out of the hole to smooth the edges of the hole. You may have to pull the tool in and out at least 12 times or more.
- Spread cement over one of the plugs. Thread the plug through the hole on the insertion tool.
- Place the insertion tool into the hole on the tire. Make sure about ½ inch of the remains sticking out of the tire.
- Pull the insertion tool out quickly. The plug will remain inside the tire. Cut the portion of the plug that sticks out with wire cutters and ensure the remaining parts of the plug is flush with the tire.
- Air up the tire and replace it back on the vehicle.
