How to Fix a Propane Generator With Starting Problems

When a propane generator will not start, it can be a frustrating experience. Before rushing the generator to the shop for expensive repairs, there are a few simple checks that one can perform at home to try to resolve the problem.

  1. Check to be sure that you have not flooded the engine. One of the most common problems is by starting the generator incorrectly. If you over-crank the engine, especially in the winter, this can cause flooding, resulting in the engine not starting.

  2. Inspect the regulating seats for dirt. Excess priming or dirt on the regulating seats results in propane gas leaks. The spark plug will not start if there is gas leaking nearby.

  3. Replace the spark plugs. The spark plug gap should be around .025. An incorrect spark plug gap can result in starting problems.

  4. Check for vacuum and air leaks.

  5. Ensure the carburetor is the right size. An incorrect size on the carburetor can result in a propane generator that will not start all the time.

  6. Check to be sure the location of the carburetor is correct. The regulator, fuel lock and electric fuel lock head also need to be in the exact right positions. If any of these vital engine parts is improperly positioned, the engine will not start.

  7. Inspect the idle mixture. If the idle mixture is improperly mixed, the engine may intermittently not start.

If everything checks out, then the engine may not be in good shape and could potentially need to be replaced.
