How to Fix a Storm Door That Won't Close

Door

Storm doors can be a bit finicky. These doors will sometimes either slam shut, or worse, not close at all. Usually this issue can be fixed by adjusting one thing or another in order to make the door close. You may have to try more than one suggestion before finding the one that is right for your door. Luckily, they are all pretty easy to do.

  • Observe the door closing from the inside. Be sure that nothing is stopping it from closing all the way. Something small could be on the floor that you have not noticed that is stopping it from closing.
  • Inspect your interior door for any screws, bolts or pieces that have come loose that could be keeping the storm door from closing.
  • Adjust the door closer; this is the cylinder shaped piece on the storm door. Using a screwdriver, turn the screw found at the end counter clockwise. This will cause the door to close faster, which may give it enough speed to close all the way. When the screw is turned clockwise it causes the door to close slower. This may be the reason it is not closing all the way. In most storm door situations, playing around with the door closer adjustments is the key to resolving the issue.
  • Open the door so you can see the hinges. Move the door in an open and closed manner to see if either hinge is broken. If one is broken, replace it with a new hinge.

  • Check the screws on the hinges to be sure these are all in place and that none are loose. If you find any that are loose, use the screwdriver to tighten these.
  • Open the storm door window slightly. When both the inside door is closed and the storm door has windows in instead of screens, it creates air pressure. Opening the window slightly allows the air to escape, which will enable your door to close properly.
