How to Fold a Button-Down Dress Shirt

Button-down shirts are better kept or stored if you are able to hang them. If you do not have room in your closet, or simply wish to just fold the shirts, there is a specific method to fold this garment to keep its appearance in tact.

Things You Will Need:

  • Iron

  1. Prepare the shirt before attempting to fold it. In order to ensure the shirt is prepared, iron it so that every aspect of the shirt is crisp, flat and free of wrinkles. This ensures that the shirt will need minimal ironing when you are ready to wear it. Another part of preparing the shirt is to make sure that all of the buttons are fastened before you begin to fold.

  2. Place the buttoned-up shirt on a flat surface so that the front of the shirt is facing down. Make sure the shirt is free of wrinkles from the back side as well.

  3. Fold one sleeve across the body off the shirt on the back of the shirt in a diagonal fashion. Once the sleeve is completely straightened out, fold the bottom half of the sleeve back on itself so that the sleeve only appears half of its original length. Repeat the same sleeve-folding method with the opposite sleeve so that both sleeves are halfway folded in diagonal shapes.

  4. Fold the bottom half of the shirt up on itself so that it ends just below the shoulders. Smooth out any wrinkles and flip it over so that the front of the shirt is facing upwards. Your shirt is now neatly folded and can be placed in your drawers or on your shelf.
