How to Frame Around Basement Windows
A basement that has not been insulated runs the risk of losing heat, thereby rising your energy costs. Proper insulation in the basement involves not only insulating the entrances to the basement, including the windows, but also making sure that the walls to the basement have the proper insulation as well.
Directions:
- Take a measurement of the basement's dimensions so that you can calculate the size for your new wall. Use a tape measure, getting the height and width of the wall, as well as the window's dimensions.
- Buy 2x4 lumber from the hardware store. You will need pieces running vertically and horizontally. Make sure to purchase enough 2x4 for these pieces, as well as extra ones that you will be using to frame the opening to the window.
- Cut the 2x4s to the length you will need, according to the measurements. The boards you will be using for the vertical pieces need to be the same length.
- Put the frame together by nailing the 2x4 boards. The center studs should be placed in between the horizontal boards and should be spaced sixteen inches apart.
- Measure the placement of the vertical studs for the window and pencil in the measurements. Cut the studs with a saw, and put position horizontal boards above and below the position of the vertical studs.
- Nail the boards together with framing nails. Position the frame on the wall of the basement, and put it into place according to the measurements you made for its position after assembly.
