How to Frame Custom Windows
Framing a window correctly is very important. A frame that doesn't properly seal the window from the outside weather will allow air and moisture to seep through. There are a few things that need to be done in order for the window frame to properly seal off any moisture.
Things You'll Need:
- Tape Measure
- Pencil
- Paper
- Caulk
- Insulation Foam
- Electric Saw
- Level
- Wood
- Galvanized Nails
- Hammer
- Stud Finder
- Measure the size of the opening for the window with a tape measure. Write these numbers down and you might also want to consider drawing a sketch to use as a blueprint. It's very important that you get very accurate measurements.
- Purchase the necessary supplies for your frame at a home improvement store. Make sure you ask an expert at the store to make sure you're buying all the necessary supplies.
- Build the frame and attach it to the window with galvanized nails and a hammer. The frame should include a windowsill and header. Use a level to make sure everything fits properly. A window frame cannot be installed properly if it isn't level. Also make sure you're attaching the window to wall studs. The weight of the window will rip the nails off regular drywall. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs.
- Seal the edges of the window frame with insulation foam and caulk. Make sure you caulk around the inside and outside edges of the window frame. Allow the caulk to dry for at least one day.
