How to Gel Stain Fiberglass Entry Doors
If you have a fiberglass door, you may think that the only option for restoring it is to paint it. This is not true, as you can also stain your fiberglass door to make it look like natural wood by using a gel stain. This technique will allow you to transform your fiberglass door to the look of wood in no time.
- Clean your fiberglass entry way door with soap and water, and then rinse with clean water to ensure that no residue is left behind on the surface of your door.
- Allow your door to dry thoroughly, or dry it with a clean towel to speed up the drying process.
- Remove all hardware from your fiberglass entryway door to make the staining process easier. You will need a standard flathead or Phillips screwdriver to remove the door handle and locks on your fiberglass entryway door.
- Tape off any areas that you do not want to get the gel stain on with painter's tape. Be sure to push down on the tape so that it forms a protective seal.
- Apply a thin coat of the gel-based stain in the color of your choice to your fiberglass entry way door using a 2 inch paintbrush with natural bristles. You should make slow and deliberate up and down strokes so that the stain is applied in a manner that will replicate the look of wood grain.
- Allow the stain to sit on the surface of your fiberglass entryway door for about 5 minutes, and then wipe off the excess stain with a clean rag. You should be left with a finish that looks like the grain of wood.
- Allow the stain to dry for a couple of hours, and then replace your hardware onto your door using a standard Phillips or flathead screwdriver.
