How to Program Television Channels

How to Get Basic Local Television Channels Without Cable Service

You cannot simply attach an antenna to your television and receive local channels, as in the past. You also don't need cable service to receive them either. Getting basic channels on your television without purchasing cable service is a lot easier than you probably think.

Things You'll Need:

  • Converter Box

  • Coax Cable

  1. Purchase a converter box at a local electronics store. All the converter boxes should be the same so it shouldn't matter what kind you buy. It's also possible that you might not need a converter box depending upon what type of television you have. Talk with an expert at the local electronics store about weather or not you need a converter box.

  2. Purchase coax cable from the electronics store if you don't already have any at your house. Make sure the coax cable is long enough to reach from where you'll place the converter box to where your television will be.

  3. Attach your antenna cable coming from the wall into the "RF IN" jack on your converter box. The cable should screw into the jack easily with the threaded coupler at the end.

  4. Connect your coax cable from the "RF OUT" jack on your converter box to the "IN" input on the back of your television. The coax cable should screw in easily just like your antenna cable.

  5. Attach your antenna cable straight into the "IN" input on the back of your television if you didn't need a converter box. You should now be able to turn on your television to the input you attached the cable and begin watching regular channels.
