How to Get Court-Ordered Paternity Testing

Being a single mother is hard enough without wondering who the father of your child is.  Getting a court-ordered paternity test means that the father must obey the law and be tested. This prevents a dead-beat dad from abandoning the child. Court-ordered testing is conclusive in telling you who the father is. Knowing your rights will be immensely helpful for you and your child.

  1. Decide whether a court-appointed paternity test needs to be done.

  2. Consult with a lawyer. The lawyer will help you with the required paperwork and evidence, if needed. If you cannot afford a lawyer look into any free clinics or court appointed lawyers. If you fall short in those methods, go to your attorney general's office. They are there to carry out child support orders and round up child support payment.

  3. Name the person you suspect is the father and give the information to the lawyer or attorney general's office. If you are unsure, you can request multiple tests. The lawyer will be able to help you accomplish this as there are different procedures depending on the state you reside in.

  4. File all of the required paperwork and documentation. If you have hired a lawyer, he or she will handle this. Wait for the court to set a test date. You and the suspected father will receive notice in the mail.

  5. Understand that once you start the process you will need to continue with it. The courts will usually not just make the father give child support until a custody agreement is settled upon. The judge will also give him visitation rights once he is confirmed as the father. So, make sure you understand all your advantages and disadvantages.
