How to Get Good Airline Seats

A good airline seat can change a nerve-racking experience into a smooth ride. If you fly frequently for business, or just have a trip coming up, plan ahead for more of an enjoyable flight. Get a good airline seat to guarantee all the extra legroom and comfort you will need.

  • Check web specials online. Many airlines now lower discounted rates on their individual websites, usually on certain days of the week. Web specials are usually located on an airline company’s main website.  Web specials have built-in discounts, which allow you to purchase better seats for a lower price.

  • Check in early, and beat the rush. Arrive early to the airport, at least by 2 hours. Beat the crowds and get your choice of the available seats. Some airlines even offer the option of checking in online, which removes an extra step once you arrive to the airport.

  • Ask for the bulkhead or exit row seat. The bulkhead seat is the first row of the airplane, and usually provides more leg room. Flight attendants will typically ask for a volunteer to sit at the exit row. Exit row seats also have a more comfortable space for seating. However, exit row passengers are expected to assist others during a time of emergency.

  • Avoid peak business travel times. One of the biggest mistakes among vacation travelers is choosing to fly on a busy business travel day. A good rule of thumb is to avoid early Monday, or late Friday flights. This rule may change depending on your specific airport, but it is easy to find out the busiest times of the departing airport. Simply ask. If a plane is packed with a full flight, your chances of scoring a good seat are slim to none.
