How to Get High-Speed Internet Service Through Telephone Lines

Three types of high-speed Internet services utilize a normal telephone line to connect the user to the Internet. They are DSL, broadband and high-speed dial-up. The differences between these services are the modem they use and the speed of service.

  1. Decide which type of high-speed service you want. Both DSL and broadband will be a faster option then high-speed dial-up. Only one, high-speed dial-up, requires dedicated use of a phone line. The other two utilize the phone line but do not require dedicated use, which means that you can use your home phone at the same time.

  2. Contact the provider offering the best price at the speed you want. Depending on where you live you may have several options to choose from. If you have speed requirements, don't just choose the cheapest plan, as there are often different plans available from the same company.

  3. Wait for a representative from the company to come install your high-speed Internet service, if you have chosen DSL or broadband. In many instances, the company will supply all the equipment you need for free, in exchange for signing a contract with them. All you may need is a modem and a phone line splitter.

  4. Hook your phone cord directly into your computer from your phone jack if you have chosen high-speed dial-up. Once you are plugged in, open up the software and subscribe.

  5. Use your Internet. Once your line has been installed, you are ready to use your high-speed Internet access whenever you want.
