How to Get Ideas for a Garage Apartment

A garage apartment is an apartment built over a garage, and it can provide accommodation for guests or it can be rented out. When designing the construction of a garage apartment it is important to plan carefully to make sure that the apartment will function as a place to relax. Here are some tips for designing a garage apartment.

  1. Inspect the garage for safety. Examine the wiring, flooring and stairs that lead up to where the new apartment will be built. Fix any problems before you begin investing in the construction of the apartment. Draw a floor plan and put it to graph paper. Consult with a builder about any issues that might need special attention. Make sure you check with the appropriate office to review local building codes and obtain a building permit.

  2. Examine the condition of the roof. Inspect the roof areas to see if there are any needed repairs. Take a look at exterior windows and doors. Get an electrician to check the wiring to see if there are special concerns. Discuss the cooling and heating options for the apartment as well.

  3. Design the interior of the garage apartment. Include a living area with the kitchen at one side. You should also include a bathroom and a bedroom. Plan to have a wall unit to hold a TV and all other media equipment as well as books. You will need at least one large window to add light to the apartment.

  4. Add stairs that lead out of the apartment. Construct these stairs on the exterior of the garage. Make the stairs wide enough to allow moving furniture into and out of the apartment. Install deadbolt locks to the outside door of the apartment for safety purposes. Consider installing a steel walk-out door for added security.

  5. Paint the interior in a neutral color. Use white or beige color in all of the interior walls so as to make the space in the apartment look bigger. Place a few granite tiles on the kitchen counter.
