How to Get International Health Insurance

When you travel frequently you want to be sure you cover all your bases. One big worry is health insurance for the times when you are out of the country. Health care is important and you should be prepared for times that you will need it. Here are the steps you can take to find the right international health insurance plan.

  1. Set up a plan with loved ones for what will happen if you have a medical emergency or crisis. Know who will have any information needed so you can designate that person in the event you are unable to give it to health care providers or insurance representatives in a time of need.

  2. Research the offerings of international health insurance policies. Find out if your health insurance has a contingency for traveling out of the country. Find out what health insurance policies cover in terms of international travel and how it applies to your predetermined plan.

  3. Check online and with an insurance agency for the best quotes. Many online sites offer free quotes. An agency will probably help you compare the offering of several policies to find what fits your needs best. You should look into available services and be sure to check out medication coverage.

  4. Fill out forms regarding your health and medical history. Some insurance policies require that you disclose your entire medical history and you may need to meet with a healthcare provider in their network to have a check-up and interview.

  5. Present the proper documents. This may require any travel insurance, documents to establish the relationship between you and your family members (if you seek coverage for them), and documents proving your citizenship.

  6. Enroll in the international health insurance program that best suits your needs. You may need to make an initial payment on the premium or establish the amount of your deductible.  This will finalize your agreement with an insurance agency, and you will have acquired international health insurance.
