How to Get Into an Licensed Practical Nurse Program

Licensed nursing programs are available through some hospitals, community colleges and technical schools. Such practical nurse programs specialize in medical procedures and are a great way to move up through the health care field. The requirements are pretty standard, but vary depending on the institution.

  • Choose a school and program. Students who want to become LPNs have to complete a training program in practical nursing before applying for a state license. The program can take from nine to 18 months. You can complete the program at a community college or a school of nursing.

  • Express interest by volunteering at a hospital. The LPN program admits a certain amount of people. Volunteer work always looks good on a potential nursing candidate resumé when applying to a school. It shows seriousness and a strong interest in pursuing a career in the health care field. Volunteer work also shows a compassion and understanding for human life. Compassion is a very strong characteristic to possess in the nursing field.

  • Apply to schools and submit the required documents with the application. Applicants are required to send a copy of high school transcripts, and any transcripts from any other school attended when applying for admissions. Most schools are willing to mail transcripts anywhere with a request in writing from the student.

  • Work on interviewing techniques. Some LPN programs require a face-to-face interview as a requirement to enter the program. Candidates must work on their public speaking and rehearse potential questions, as well.
