How to Get Orthodontic Braces

Braces are dental devices that are put in place by an orthodontist and used to straighten teeth. Braces can be worn for a few weeks or a few years, depending on how severely crooked the teeth are. Many people will wear braces during childhood and again as adults. Braces may not be stylish or comfortable, but they are functional.

Step 1: Visit your dentist to get a referral to an orthodontist.

Step 2: Call the orthodontist office and set up an appointment. Let them know who your dentist is and that they refferred you to them.

Step 3: Meet with the orthodontist. Take this time to ask any questions you might have. Although your dentist will send your file to the orthodontist, you may want to inform him of any dental problems you have had in the past.

Step 5: Discuss your payment options with your orthodontist. Because braces are considered a cosmetic type of dental work they are usually not covered by health insurance. If the dentist or orthodontist decides your braces are medically necessary, then they are more likely to be covered by health insurance as well as Medicare and Medicaid. Braces can cost between $1,500 and $5000.

Step 4: Make an appointment to have the braces put on your teeth. Be sure to eat well before your appointment. Braces can be painful at first and you may not feel like eating for a few days.

Step 5: Go to all of your appointments on time. You braces will need to be adjusted every few weeks. If you miss an appointment, you will have to wear the braces longer. Most people wear braces for about 2 years. If your teeth are severely crooked, you may need to wear the braces longer.
