How to Get Rid of Old Trophies
Most adults have trophies of some kind hanging around on a dusty shelf or packed away in a forgotten box. The sentimental value of these trophies fades for some, and they no longer want to keep the old awards. Most trophy makers are not interested in old trophies; they make new trophies for each customer.
- Reuse the trophies in other sports. Several running clubs across the United States have followed the example of the South Carolina Tiger Trails 5K run. This huge non-season high school cross country meet also attracts the top United States adult amateurs. A highlight of the event is the awards ceremony. Winners may receive a three-foot-tall bowling trophy or two-foot-tall Cub Scout derby trophy. The organizers realized years ago they had access to dozens of old, unwanted trophies from other races and events and decided to use them as a lark. It was enormously popular and now inspires other groups to do the same thing.
- Mimic the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s album cover. The group famously landscaped a garden with trophies and flowers for the cover. An old trophy cup makes an intriguing bird bath or flower pot. Other trophies can serve as unique garden art.
- Sell the trophies to a pawn shop. Don’t expect the shops to pay very much.
- Donate back to the school or organization that awarded the trophy. Some may be interested in adding the trophy to a display case, especially if it was an important school event.
- Recycle what can be salvaged from the trophies, such as screws, and throw the rest away.
