How to Get Rid of Scratches on Black Appliances

Black appliances are popular in modern kitchens. They are simple and unassuming. The color is also easy to decorate around. While black doesn't show dirt and fingerprints as easily, a scratch will stick out like a sore thumb. Fixing this is fairly simple and can restore the appeal of your black appliances.

Scratches on black appliances can stand out. Even if it's not noticeable to everyone, you'll know it's there. Fortunately, fixing the scratches isn't that difficult with the right materials.

  • Deal with scratches on handles by ordering replacement handles. You'll need to go through the manufacturer in most cases for this. If the handle was scratched or damaged during the delivery process you may be able to get the replacement handle for free. The handles on stoves and refrigerators are subject to more wear and tear than other appliances, and can get scratched easily. You will typically only need a screwdriver to remove the old handle and attach the new one.
  • Use a paint pen for scratches on the surface of fridges and other textured appliances. You can find paint pens that are made specifically for textured appliances. You need to shake the pen before you use it to mix up the paint, and carefully apply this over the scratch. When the paint dries you'll not notice the scratched surface anymore.

  • Use black touch up paint to cover large surface scratches. Your local home improvement store should carry paint that is specifically designed for appliances. If you are touching up an oven hood or door you want to find a paint that is made specifically for this. These areas tend to get very hot, and you need a paint that isn't going to create a dangerous situation later.
  • Get some wax paper and apply a small amount of black spraypaint to it and press the wax paper over the scratch on smaller appliances. The sides of microwaves, toaster ovens and coffee pots will be difficult to touch up otherwise. The wax paper allows you to apply the smallest amount of paint possible to hide any scratches.
