How to Make Highly Scented Candles

How to Get Strong Scented Candles

Perhaps the most important thing customers look for in a candle is a strong scent.  The candle should have a strong scent when lit to fill the room with fragrance.  If you add too much scent, it will not blend with the wax and can create oily spots.

Adding just the right amount of fragrance oil takes some experimenting.  The wax, wick and fragrance oils will all affect how strong the scent is.  Each time you make candles, take careful notes of the exact wax, wax and fragrance oil used.  Also write down exactly how much wax and fragrance you use.

Things You Will Need

  • Wax

  • Wick

  • Fragrance oil

  • Pot to melt wax

  • Mold or container

  • Thermometer

  • Wooden spoon

How To Get Strong Scented Candles

  1. Use a fragrance oil made for the type of wax you are using.  Some fragrance oils are made for paraffin or soy only and cannot be used with any other type of wax.

  2. Add 1 to 1.5 ounces of fragrance oil per pound of paraffin wax.  For soy wax, use 1 ounce of fragrance oil per pound of wax.

  3. Use a high quality fragrance oils.  Poor quality fragrance oils will not have a good scent no matter how much you use.

  4. Weigh wax and fragrance oils with a scale.  Do not use liquid measurements.

  5. Select your wick based on the size of candle and the wax.  Using the wrong wick can cause a poor scent throw.

  6. Add fragrance oil just before pouring the candle when the wax has cooled.  Adding it too soon can cause the scent to burn off and will lower the scent for the finished candle.

  7. Vybar can increase the scent throw in a candle.  Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon vybar per pound of wax.  Do not add more than this, or it can lower scent throw.

  8. Soy candles need to cure for at least two weeks before burning for optimal scent throw.

  9. Use less fragrance oil if you notice white flakes or spots in your finished candles.  This means the fragrance was not completely dissolved in the wax.
