How to Get a Duplicate Social Security Card
Your Social Security card is perhaps one of the most important pieces of identification that you have. It is vital in today’s financial transactions and it is virtually impossible to apply for any other type of federal or state identification without having it present.
Having a Social Security card allows you to apply for employment, receive certain government benefits and complete bank transactions. Replacing a Social Security card can be tedious, but the steps are fairly simple.
- Locate documents to prove your identity. The Social Security Administration will only allow specific types of credentials as proof of identity. A U.S. driver's license, U.S. passport or state-issued non-driver identification card are the top three choices. If you were not born in the United States, you will need your immigration papers. All of your documents must be in their original form or certified copies. Photocopies or notarized copies are not admissible.
- Go online to the Social Security Administration and complete an application for a social security card. You can download the SS-5 form, print and fill out the sections that apply.
- Take your completed form and required documents to the Social Security Administration office in your local area. You can also mail the paperwork. Some states require you to bring your application in person so check with the SSA’s guidelines for your state. Your replacement should arrive in the mail within 10 business days.
- Keep your replacement Social Security card in a safe place and never carry it with you. It should be stored with your other important documents such as your birth certificate and passport. If your purse or wallet is lost or stolen, you will have to replace your Social Security card again.
