How to Get a Home Loan With Bad Credit

Receiving a home loan with bad credit is hard if not impossible. If you do find a bank that is willing to finance a loan for you, they may charge a much higher interest rate which can significantly increase the monthly repayment amount. Be careful to read the terms and conditions of your loan so that you know what you are taking on.

  1. Apply for a copy of your credit report so that you know exactly what you are working with. In order to obtain a home loan from a bank, you need your credit score to be no lower than 620. Although this credit score is not ideal, it will allow you to get financed for a home loan.

  2. Begin paying off your debts on your credit report. This will help increase your credit score over time. If there are any debts that you disagree with on your credit report, write the company a letter and let them know why you do not feel that you owe this debt. Occasionally debts can be removed from your credit report by doing this.

  3. Save up your money! If your credit is less than ideal you will be required to pay a larger down payment amount than someone with excellent credit. Prepare for this by saving up at least 20-percent of the amount that you would like to finance from the bank for your home loan.

  4. Prepare to pay a high interest rate on your loan if your credit score is low. This is one of the costs of having low credit, and cannot be changed without improving your credit score.

  5. Apply for a loan that you can afford to repay. Be sure to consider all of your other monthly expenses when deciding how much you can afford to pay for your mortgage monthly.

  6. Refinance your home once you have improved you credit. This is a great way to receive a lower interest rate, so that your monthly mortgage payments will reduce significantly.
