How to Get a Hosting Job
A hosting job is a great position to get started with in the restaurant business. It is considered an entry-level position, but there is a great deal of importance to the position. A host or a hostess is the first person that a patron sees upon entering a restaurant.
- Create a resume with detailed work experience that can relate or contribute to success as a host with a restaurant. It is important to notate any awards or special recognition that has been given. A host position requires organization and excellent customer service since this is the first person a customer interacts with when they walk into a restaurant.
- Obtain an application form the restaurant that is hiring for the host position. Be sure to interact in a friendly manner with everyone at the restaurant. The staff will remember who was friendly and who was not, so it is crucial to be friendly with everyone.
- Fill out the application and be sure to notate any special achievements or traits that are important to the job. Make sure and fill out every section of the application even if it duplicates what your resume has.
- Attach the resume to the application, and hand deliver the application and resume to the restaurant. Ask to speak with the person in charge of hiring, and be sure to look the person in the eyes when speaking with them. Start by introducing yourself, and extend your hand for a firm handshake. Hand your resume and application over and inquire when they expect to be calling back for interviews.
- Call the restaurant back if you have not heard anything by date that was given by the hiring manager. Follow up is extremely important in the hiring process. The restaurant business can get very busy, so it is up to the person who wants the job to follow up.
- Attend the interview in business attire even if you are applying at a casual dining establishment. It is important to always give a professional appearance while at an interview.
