How to Get a Job in Public Transportation

If you are interested in becoming part of the public transportation department, you should apply for a job in your region. They offer competitive salaries, training programs and tuition assistance. The best part about it is that it is a very easy process to find local transportation jobs and apply for them.

Being a part of the public transportation team is quite the honor. They are environmentally friendly and reliable. Job opportunities consist of, but are not limited to, engineers, technicians, clerical staff, transit drivers and transit officials.

  • Navigate to the American Public Transit Association website and search the available jobs. They post new jobs weekly and you can see these postings in one of two ways. One is to access the direct website and the other is to subscribe to the weekly newsletter online.

  • Look through the Transportation Security Administration website to find jobs in your area. This website lists many resources and links by city.

  • Figure out what training you need for the job that you are interested in. For example, bus drivers must take a written exam and have a commercial driver's license. Some positions require an associate's or bachelor's degree. If the job you are interested in doesn't require a degree, call the transit authority to find out what training the specific job requires and whether they provide the training or you have to pursue it independently.

  • Attend the Transit Trainer's Workshop in Denver, Colorado. It provides workshops and speakers that cover areas from safety concerns to transit maintenance. This will give you a better understanding of what each different job entails while increasing your chances at getting a job in public transportation.
