Obtaining a personal loan from a private lender is the most sought loan type that is offered through financial institutions. A personal loan is has a short approval time and can be used by the borrower for immediate expenses. Flexible repayment options are also available.

There are few things that you will need in order to qualify for a personal loan. You will need:

  • Good credit

  • Paycheck stubs or other documentation showing proof of income.

  1. Gather all of your recent check stubs and all proof of income. A letter from your company that references your length of service with the company is also a good idea.

  2. Prior to heading to the bank you may want to find out your credit score. The lender is going to run a credit check when you apply for the personal loan, but it is good to have an idea of your score beforehand. Depending on your credit score, you may be able to bargain with the loan officer for a better interest rate.

  3. If you do not get approved through a bank or credit union you can also try applying through an online private lender. A personal loan through an online lender will probably carry a higher interest rate and the repayment terms will be stricter.

  4. If you are a homeowner you can also seek a personal loan instead of a home-equity loan. The interest rates of a personal loan will be higher but you will not have to use your home as collateral. The bank takes the greater risk in this situation and this is why there is an inflated interest rate.

  5. Each lending situation is different and the institutions create their own policies in regards to loan approvals, terms and conditions, and the maximum loan amounts. Consider the fees, penalties, repayment terms, and the APR (annual percentage rate) of your loan.
