How to Get a School Bus Driver's License

If you enjoy driving and would like to have a career in transportation, becoming a school bus driver may be a good fit for you. This type of occupation is great for people who feel comfortable driving large vehicles and enjoy being around children. You will sometimes be around children for long periods during field trips and other excursions.

  • Obtain your regular driver's license as well as a commercial driver's license. The commercial license is required by most states when you are driving a certain amount of people such as 12, 14 or 16 (numbers vary by state). Complete the necessary paperwork, training and exams to receive your commercial driver's license.

  • Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles for information about receiving a school bus driver's license and whether one is required. If it is, the DMV should provide you with information about fees for the training, coursework to study, and written and behind-the-wheel exams.

  • Complete your medical examination for the Department of Transportation Medical Certificate (DL-51) as is required by some states such as California. While your state may not require this form, it may have it's own laws regarding a physical examination and certificate.

  • Study your bus driver's coursework and pass the written exam. This may or may not precede bus driver classes and training before you take your road test.

  • Make an appointment to take your behind-the-wheel bus driver road test when you feel you are ready and have had sufficient training.

  • Complete any other requirements for your school bus driver's license such as a background check, drug test, vision test or paying additional fees.
