How to Get a Shirt Tailored

Many people prefer to get a shirt tailored to make it look better and fit properly. Finding a good tailor often takes some time, depending on the type of alterations that need to be done. Getting a recommendation is usually the best way to find a tailor who has a reputation for quality work.

  • Ask the salesperson at the store where you buy the shirt where you can find a good tailor. Many stores have an in-house tailor that you can use for free; however, that may not always be the best thing to do. Ask to see a sample of the tailor’s work to see if you want to use the one at the store.

  • Talk with a friend who has shirts that fit nicely to find out a tailor to use. Ask your friend if the shirts have any alterations or if they just happen to fit well. If your friend does use a tailor for shirt alterations, find out where to go and set up a time to take your shirt in to the tailor.

  • Look in the Yellow Pages directory to find tailors in your area. Contact one of the tailor shops to find out if they can alter your shirt. Find out how much the alterations cost before you take your shirt in to the shop.

  • Check online to find tailors that perform alterations on the type of shirt you have. For example, some tailors may only alter dress shirts and not other types of shirts. Contact a tailor you find online to make sure the service alters your type of shirt.

  • Meet with the tailor you choose and put on the shirt. Make sure the tailor measures you properly so you have the alterations done correctly. Explain to the tailor exactly how you would like the shirt to fit so there is no confusion. Find out when the shirt will be ready to pick up and make sure to also get a receipt from the tailor.
