How to Get a Sigmoidoscopy to Test for Colitis
If your doctor suspects that you may have colitis, he will recommend that you take a sigmoidoscopy to diagnose and treat the problem. A sigmoidoscopy helps the doctor see the lower portion of the colon and determine the type of inflammation present on the colon.
Materials
- Enema
- Liquid diet
- Discuss with your health care provider the risk and benefits involve in getting a sigmoidoscopy. Although this test is commonly performed, it can cause complications so it is imperative that you discuss all scenarios and weigh your options prior to doing the procedure.
- Follow your doctor preparation guidelines for the procedure. Your doctor will recommend a liquid diet starting 24 hours before you have the sigmoidoscopy.
- Take a laxative to clean the colon completely. Normally, your medical provider will recommend that you take an over-the-counter laxative such as magnesium citrate. He may also suggest you use an enema kit a couple hours before the procedure as well. This is to ensure the colon has no fecal matter.
- Give yourself sufficient time to arrive at the facility for the procedure. Even though, the procedure may only last 15 to 30 minutes most providers will recommend you arrive within 1 to 2 hours before the test. Be prepared to fill out additional paperwork, sometimes there are other information requested that requires filling out such as insurance information.
- Disrobe following the medical provider instructions. Lay in the position that the medical doctor recommends for the rectal exam.
- Stay calm during the procedure. Your doctor will use a camera attach to a scope to look at the colon and then remove small tissues as well as any polyps on the colon lining that he may find. You may feel some discomfort as well as pressure during the procedure and a strong desire to have a bowel movement. However, try not to move as this is necessary for the doctor to properly diagnose.
- Relax and breathe slowly when your doctor removes the sigmoidoscope from the rectum. After removal, your cramping and discomfort will dissipate, but you will continue passing gas for a few hours.
