How to Get an Air Conditioner Compressor

Purchasing a new air conditioner can be expensive.  In situations that call for nothing more than a new compressor, it is possible to find a compatible component and be able to get several more years of use without having to buy a new conditioner.  Fortunately, there are several places to look for a replacement air conditioner compressor and save a lot of money in the bargain.

  1. Determine the make and model of your air conditioner, as well as any identification numbers that have to do with the unit.  Most units are produced with stock parts, including compressors.  This detail will be found on either a small metal plate or a weather resistant sticker that is found on the casing of the air conditioner.

  2. Check on the availability and pricing of a replacement air conditioner compressor through the dealer where the unit was originally purchased.  Depending on the type of dealer involved, it may be able to order a new compressor with ease.  If the dealer does not have that ability, ask for contact information that will allow you to speak directly with the manufacturer.

  3. Call the manufacturer and ask about both new and refurbished compressors that will fit your unit.  Keep in mind refurbished is not the same as used.  A refurbished compressor is a used unit that has been restored to factory specifications and will likely come with some sort of warranty.  If a new one is not available, the refurbished may be the best bet.

  4. Go to the Internet.  There is always the chance you can find a company that offers restored compressors that will fit your unit, or possibly even find a similar unit that is in good working order and can be used to harvest components.  If going for a restored or refurbished unit, ask if there is a warranty and also exactly what was done as part of the restoration, as a way of making sure the compressor is in fact back to factory specifications.

  5. Compare all options in terms of price, shipping and delivery charges.  The idea is to get the best air conditioner compressor for the lowest cost.  Don’t forget to factor in the labor involved in the installation of that replacement compressor as well as the purchase price and shipping charges.  Doing so will ensure that the out of pocket expense is kept within reason and that the overall cost is favorable in comparison to simply purchasing a new air conditioner.
