How to Get an Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering

Getting an associate’s degree in electrical engineering can help to prepare for a career in the engineering industry. An associate’s degree usually takes two years to complete; however, it is possible to earn it in less time by taking more classes each semester. Many colleges offer summer sessions, which can also help to earn the degree in less than 2 years.

  1. Decide which school to apply to for electrical engineering. Review different colleges and technical schools to determine which one is the best fit. Enroll in the school and meet with an academic advisor to create your class schedule.

  2. Take as many classes as you can to earn your associate’s degree in less than 2 years. Make sure that you try to attend every class so you do not fall behind. Meet with your teachers on a regular basis to find out the best way to study for your tests.

  3. Start a study group with some of your classmates. Keep the group small to make it more productive. By studying with others, you can often increase the test scores of everyone in the group. Plan to meet at least twice each week, or more if you are able.

  4. Apply for an internship after you finish your first year of school. Ask your electrical engineering advisor for help finding the best firm to intern with. You will learn the various responsibilities that the position requires and possibly line up a job after you graduate, if you work hard during the internship and impress your employer.

  5. Study for your final exams so you can graduate with your degree. Ask your teachers to provide a list of the main focus of the exams and learn the material until it is second nature. After you pass all of your exams, you will earn your associate’s degree and can then start to apply for a position as an electrical engineer.
