How to Get an Auto Loan With Bad Credit

Everyone needs a way to get around. When it comes time to get a new car, credit is a very important issue. Most people do not have great credit either because they have chosen to spend too much and couldn't afford the bill or they have had to live off of credit cards due to unforeseen circumstances.

  1. The first step in getting an auto loan is to be realistic about what you can reasonably afford. Look at your credit scores to know how bad your credit is. This way you have an idea of what kind of car you can reasonably expect to get. Check your bills and earnings as well so you know what money you already have going out and what money you have coming in.

  2. Assess how much you will be able to put down on a car. This could be money that you have been saving or another car to trade in. The overall amount you can offer in cash or trade for a new car is going to look significantly better that going in with nothing.

  3. Speak to the place where you are planning on purchasing the car from about their in-house financing options. Some dealerships will finance a car in-house to someone so they can get you into one of their cars. These types of auto loans are often high interest. Also, you will not be offered a brand new car if you have bad credit. However, there are some cars that a dealer will have no problem letting go of over a car that is much newer.

  4. Ask the bank to finance you. There are some places that will give you an auto loan with bad credit but the overall rate of interest is going to be very high. Some banks even insist on keeping the title to the car until it is paid off if your credit is that bad.
