How to Give Up a Vehicle to a Car Finance Company
Once you have determined that you cannot continue to make payments on your car, what do you do next? If repossession is something you prefer not to do, you do have another option. One thing you may want to consider is surrendering the car willingly.
- Try to sell the sell the car yourself to friends or relatives if possible first. This could be a very easy way out prior to messing with your credit standing. If you have to give it away for what you owe that is much better than losing it outright and still perhaps owing money on it as well.
- Tell your finance institution that you can no longer make the payments. If that is the dealer speak with the finance manager or someone who does account servicing there.
- Find out everything you can before you actually surrender the car. There could actually be certain instances where you will be better off keeping the car than giving it up.
- Wash and clean up the car if you do surrender it. Most likely they will sell it at auction and the nicer it is the more money it will bring. If it needs repairs try to get them done. Whatever the difference is between your balance and the selling price you will still owe.
- Check all areas of your finances to make certain that you cannot make your car payments. Just because you surrender it doesn’t mean you aren’t still responsible for the loan. The last thing you want to do is have no car and still have payments.
