How to Give a B12 Shot

B12 is an important vitamin to the body. When the body does not have enough of it's own, taking B12 shots may be required. There are special steps that have to be followed when taking these shots. Cleanliness and giving the correct amount is vital when giving these types of shots.

Items Needed to Give B12 Injection:

  • Cotton Ball

  • Injection Needle/Syringe

  • Soap/Water

  • B12 Vial

  • Gauze

How to Give a B12 Injection

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.  Set the area up where you will be giving the shot. Take the syringe out of its plastic wrapper.

  2. Keep the cover over the needle until it is about to be used. Set the area up with cotton balls, alcohol and the B12 vial.

  3. Saturate the cotton ball with alcohol. Wipe the top of the B12 vial. Remove the needle's cover and pull back on the plunger to allow air in that will be equal to the B12 you will be injecting.

  4. Hold the syringe in your hand. Avoid allowing the needle to touch anything around it. Push the needle into the top of the B12 vial.

  5. Pull back on the needle syringe to get the B12 solution. Tap the side of the syringe to force any bubbles up and out of the syringe and into the vial. Pull the needle out from the vial and set the vial down.

  6. Locate the appropriate intramuscular injection. Clean the area with alcohol, you can use cotton ball to do this.

  7. Pull the skin tight where it was cleaned. Stick the needle in and give the shot. Pull the needle out really quick and hold clean gauze to the area.
