How to Give a Memorable Audition

Regardless of what you are auditioning for, you will want to give a memorable audition.  This is important because auditors will oftentimes see over 200 auditions for just one casting call.  So, make sure to take some steps to make yourself stand out from the crowd so that you will be more likely to be chosen for the part that you wish to play.

  • Always be polite.  Whether you are waiting to audition or are in the audition room, you need to be polite.  The auditors will find out about your bad behavior regardless of when or where it takes place.  For this reason you should also avoid choosing any performance materials that are reliant upon foul language or behavior as well.  It should also go without saying that you should never argue with the auditors either.

  • Wear plain clothes that fit you will.  If you dress too conservatively or wear a costume the auditors may not be able to picture you in their role.  Whenever the role includes a dance performance, make sure to wear high quality dancewear and bring a change of clothing for the remainder of your audition.

  • Choose a performance piece that fits your age well.  It should also showcase your skills.  Make sure that this is not a commonly performed monologue or song and that it also isn’t too complicated.  Auditors will probably hear this numerous times throughout the day making it a lot less memorable.  So, opt for a simple, effective piece instead.

  • Act with your face and your voice.  Don’t rely upon props or overt gestures.  Good actors are able to subtly convey their emotions.

  • Arrive 20 minutes early for your audition, especially if you have to read cold from a script.  This will give you time to get comfortable and practice your piece.  Auditors will also take notice of this because you will sound much more natural.  If you do make a mistake though, simply stop for a moment and then continue.

  • Prepare a brief one or two minute explanation of your experience and interest in the performing arts so that you are prepared if the auditor asks you about yourself.  This is also a great way in which to start your audition and make yourself more memorable.
