How to Glue Grass to Model Trains

Playing with model trains is a very popular hobby not only among children, but also adults. You can create your own miniature world of trains by building model railroads. Adding a grass to your landscape can add realism and color to your railroad landscape.

Materials Needed:

  • Grass scatterings

  • Bowl

  • Puffer bottle

  • Craft glue

  • White glue

  • Soft bristled paint brush

  1. Use a bowl to mix the grass scatterings in. Grass scatterings can be purchased from your local craft or hobby store. To add realism to your grass use a variety of colors of grass scatterings. You can have a mixture of dark and light green and brown for dry grass.

  2. Take the grass mixture and fill the puffer bottle about halfway. You can purchase these bottles also from craft or hobby stores for only a few dollars. Be careful not to overfill the bottle, as this could cause clumping, which can prevent the puffer bottle from getting the right airflow.

  3. Cover the area with glue where you want to lay the grass down. You can ether use craft glue or plan white glue, such as Elmer's glue. Spread the glue using a paintbrush so that is can be nice and even. Make sure to work in small areas so that your glue does not have a chance to dry before you lay down the grass.

  4. Hold the puffer bottle with the tip of it a couple of inches from the surface with the covered glue. Slightly squeeze the bottle to allow for the puff of air to push out grass scatterings and fall onto the glue-covered surface. Build the grass landscape over the entire area covered with glue by repeating this process. The puffer bottle works to disperse the grass at various angles to help give it the appearance of a three-dimensional look.

  5. Remove excess scatterings to reveal the bare areas by blowing the grass. Repeat Step 4 until all bare areas are filled in. Let the glue and grass dry for at least a few hours.

  6. Sweep away any excess grass using a soft bristled paintbrush for the dried areas. If you desire, you can save any extra grass scatterings to use for future projects.
