How to Glue Treated Lumber

Treated lumber is injected with and soaked in several different chemicals that help make it more weather resistant and last longer. Treated lumber can be used to create many different type of products. It can easily be glued to other lumber with high quality wood glue.

Items Needed:

  • Medium grit sand paper

  • Wood glue

  • Clamps

  • Cloth or towel

  • Waterproof sealer

  1. Use medium grit sand paper to sand the area of each piece of wood where you will be gluing the treated lumber. Sand the surface to create a smooth texture that will help the area adhere to the treated lumber. Use a cloth or towel to wipe away any dust or debris on the area.

  2. Place the lumber on a flat surface such as a workbench or desk. If you are working inside, you may want to cover the area with newspaper to protect it from being scratched or damaged from the lumber or glue.

  3. Open the wood glue and apply it to both pieces of the treated lumber. Press both pieces of lumber together and use a towel to remove any excess glue that is squeezed out from between the two pieces. Hold the two pieces tightly together or use a clamp to hold them. Keep them together for several minutes while the wood glue is drying. It is best to leave the wood held together with a clamp overnight. This will give the glue adequate time to dry and bond to both pieces of the lumber. Seal the glued lumber with waterproof sealer before using it on outdoor projects.
