How to Go Sightseeing on a Budget

Sightseeing is one of the most common travel activities around the world, with nearly a billion tourists a year visiting everything from national parks to foreign beaches. While it can easily become an expensive part of your trip, it is possible to go sightseeing on a budget.

  1. Plan your sightseeing trip with a group of friends. Not only will you have people to enjoy the sights with, but you'll also be able to split certain expenses, such as hotel and gas.

  2. Go to locations that are free of charge. If you don't mind paying, find out if there are certain days of the week or month that offer discounted visitor fees. If booking your trip through a travel agency, ask about any discounted locales with good sightseeing opportunities.

  3. Avoid tourist buses and guided tours, if possible. When traveling to outdoor locations, check with tourist agencies to see if there are walking paths at your desired destination and if tourists are allowed to travel on their own. Strike out on your own instead of paying to see the sights with a guide.

  4. Check local public transit schedules when you are traveling. See what public transit trains and buses can take you to the popular sights. Look into the cost of daily bus passes and compare it against the expenses involved when renting a car, such as the rental itself, gas and parking fees.

  5. Take a day trip if the destination is within driving distance from your home. Although you may be tired after the trip, you'll be more likely to make every moment count and will save money.
