How to Grill a Steakhouse Steak
A steak from a top quality steakhouse is generally a thicker cut and has very few added ingredients for taste. With all of the available options for cooking a steak, grilling is by far the best choice to bring out all of the natural flavors and give it that professional look.
Choose The Right Cut
- Locate a local butcher and visit the store to talk to them about the cuts of beef available. A filet mignon is a very desirable cut, as is a rib eye or t-bone.
- Look for a nice thick cut of meat. A good steakhouse steak is usually close to two inches.
- Make sure there is marbleizing, as this adds additional flavor to the steak. Some fat is good, but stay away from cuts with too much or you will spend uneccessary time trimming.
Prepare The Grill
- Using a gas grill is ok, but the preferred method will be a charcoal grill.
- Place charcoal in a triangular mound, add lighter fluid and then light.
- Wait for the coals to burn down to a light gray color and then disperse them evenly across the barbeque
Grilling The Steak
- Before you place the steak on the grill, a light season of salt and pepper will help to bring the flavor out.
- Lightly sprinkle kosher salt over the surface of each side of the steak. Use ground pepper by adding a dash to both sides also.
- Place steak on the grill and let it cook for approximately five minutes on each side. Take the steak off the grill and cover it. Let it stand for a few minutes before serving.
