How to Groom a Dog at Home
Many pet owners choose to groom their dog at home to save some money. There are some basic supplies to buy in order to properly groom the dog. If the dog is very active, it may be necessary for the owner to have a family member help with the grooming so the dog does not get upset.
- Go to a local pet store to buy the grooming supplies you need. Ask a store clerk to help you choose the right supplies for your dog. Some of the things you need include dog shampoo, a brush and special nail clippers.
- Calm your dog before you start the grooming process. Some dogs will try and hide or become defensive once they realize you are about to start grooming. Keep a supply of dog treats nearby to reward your dog for good behavior.
- Brush your dog to start the grooming routine. Brushing is usually enjoyable for a dog, which is why you want to perform this grooming task first. If your dog has thick fur, keep a garbage bag handy so you can remove the hair from the brush.
- Bathe your dog in a standard tub or do the task outside if you prefer. Depending on the size of your dog, it may be easier to do the task outside. Use several buckets of warm water to wet your dog down, then apply the shampoo. Have a family member refill the buckets with warm water while you are shampooing your dog. Rinse the dog off and use some old towels to dry the dog once you finish.
- Trim your dog’s nails using the special clippers. This is the least enjoyable part of the grooming process for the dog as well as the owner, so you may need a helper to hold the dog as still as possible. Be careful not to trim the dog’s nails too much, try to only trim the very ends. Reward your dog with a treat after you finish each paw.
