Growing our own coffee bean plants can be a great way to save money on expensive coffee. Whether you brew it yourself or go to a coffee shop, purchasing coffee can be expensive and an ordeal with all of the different types out there. Here is how you can grow your own coffee bean plants.

What You’ll Need:

  • Potting Soil

  • 10-10-10 Fertilizer

  • Green Coffee Beans

  • Sand

  • 6” Pot

  1. Soak your coffee beans for 24 hours in room temperature water. Because the coffee can take up to 6 months for germination, this is recommended as it can help to shorten that process.

  2. Fill up your 6” pot with sand and run water into it so the sand becomes moist. Don’t drench the sand; it does not need to be dripping. Dig a hole and place a coffee bean in it, cover it with about 1/4 “ of rich potting soil.

  3. Do not allow the potting soil to dry out. You will need to keep an eye on how damp it is until it has germinated. Once it has germinated you can get a new pot and put the newly germinated seed in there. Plant it about 1 ¼” from the surface and cover it with loam that is well draining and crumbly.

  4. Water the coffee beans on a daily basis. The soil cannot dry out. Find a spot that provides full sun for your coffee bean. If such a spot is not possible, then place it under a fluorescent plant light. Be sure to keep it away from any drafts.
