How to Grow a Magnolia Tree

Magnolias are extremely beautiful trees known for their pungent blooms and dark glossy leaves. Most people think these trees only grow in the southern states. Many of these trees are able to withstand colder temperatures if proper care is given. Trees can be planted as saplings or started from seeds. There are certain tips and guidelines for knowing how to grow a Magnolia tree. Follow any specific care instructions for the chosen tree.

  1. Know what climate zone you live in. There are some varieties of Magnolia trees that have a hardiness that can withstand colder temperatures. Many Magnolias will only do well in warmer areas like the southern states where they are known well.

  2. Assess your property for the best place to grow your tree. It is best to plant on the north side of the house for the tree to get better sunlight.

  3. Remember to envision your tree at its full height and maturity before your plant. Keep the tree away from the house and other trees, as their root system can be known to interfere with other trees and plumbing.

  4. Research care of trees that you want to plant. Some get very large, but there are some trees that are shrub like in their design and look nice in certain garden styles.

  5. Prepare the seedlings if you are starting from this method. If is important to remove the hard shell encasing the seed for it to germinate. Some gardeners will sand or cut nicks to get the same result. Soak in water overnight.

  6. Place the seeds in a mixture of moist peat moss and other protective porous substance that is organic.

  7. Grow the seeds with a clear covering in the proper slightly acidic soil. Place clear wrap over the germinating seeds for best results.

  8. Wait for seedlings to begin to sprout and place the growing saplings on a window sill.

  9. Plant your sapling in early spring for southern zones and late summer or autumn for winter climates.
