How to Hang Pictures in an Art Gallery
Art gallery spaces should be set up properly with artwork to give viewers the ability to comfortably view art pieces. For the best setup make sure that your gallery space has paintings that are arranged in a variety and at the proper height for the best viewing.
- Hang all pictures so that they are at eye level for the average viewer. The average height of a person is around five feet six inches so this will be a good height to hang pictures measuring from the floor.
- Make sure that paintings are arranged in a variety so that paintings of the same size are not placed next to one another. This will allow for the best possible looking arrangement for the gallery.
- Place pictures a consistent amount of space apart throughout the gallery. Take into account how many pictures you will be hanging to figure out how far apart they should be.
- Arrange pictures in a way so that similar styles are grouped together. This will allow viewers to go to different areas in the gallery and view paintings in groups.
- Place the piece that will be in the middle of the gallery wall first. This will allow you to use this picture as a reference when hanging other pieces so that they are evenly spaced and aligned in height.
- Do not overcrowd walls with too many pictures. Set up walled partitions in the middle of your gallery floor to give yourself more room to place artworks.
- Look at all the pieces in the gallery once you have finished placing pictures to make sure that all areas look balanced. Move pictures around if certain areas look sparse and others look crowded.
