How to Have Correct Irish Dance Form

Anyone familiar with Irish dance knows that the correct form is very important. Irish dancers hold themselves in a rigid type of pose while dancing. If you are interested in learning this fun and lively dance, you will have to learn the proper alignment and placement for your body.

  1. Stand with your feet shoulders width apart, your hands at your side and your body relaxed.

  2. Hold your head up with your chin lifted up in the air. Imagine how you would hold your head up and proud if you were royalty. Your head will stay this way when you dance.

  3. Place your arms by your side, with palms facing in, now press palms together in front of your body as if you were praying. Keep palms together and lift arms up and over head. Release your palms outward; lower them behind, so your shoulders are rolled back.  This is how you want to keep your shoulders during the dance.

  4. Make a loose fist; have your thumb pressed to the side. Place your arms at your side, with your wrist facing inward. Your arms should be straight and stiff at your sides. They should be more towards your back than your front. When you are viewed from the front, your arms should not be noticeable.

  5. Move your feet together, so the heels are touching each other. Turn your toes out as much as you can.

  6. Move your right foot, so your heel is touching your left toes. This is how you stand to begin dancing. Your toes should still be turned out. If you are familiar with ballet, your feet should be in 5th position. Now that you have the correct form, you are ready to begin dancing.
