How to Hide an Electric Panel With a Kitchen Renovation
Every home has electrical panel access somewhere. As larger homes are built with higher electricity needs, many homes actually have multiple panels in order to prevent overload. Many builders place these electrical panels in garages or closets so that homeowners do not have to look at the unsightly, often metal panels.
If you have an electrical panel in your kitchen, you probably want to hide it, or at a minimum, blend it into the décor. If you are working on a minor, or major kitchen re-model, then it is an ideal time to examine how this panel can best be hidden.
- Plan ahead. If you are doing a major renovation that requires new wiring and the services of an electrician, you may find that you can incorporate re-locating the box into the budget of your renovation project. Consider re-locating the panel into a walk-in pantry for example. Discuss this option with your electrician as you begin planning for your project.
- Determine if the panel can be blended into new furniture or accessories. Often something as simple as a lamp or bookcase strategically placed can help minimize or disguise your electrical panel. The idea is to ensure that the panel is still accessible when needed, but not obviously sticking out.
- Maximize your use of color. Consider covering the panel door with your room’s wallpaper pattern if applicable to help with the blending process. Painting the panel may also help it blend in with the room and make it all but unnoticeable.
- Review design ideas of other homeowners. Other DYI enthusiasts have grappled with this very issue. Perform a web search for inspiration. Others have created murals or faux picture frame or aquariums scenes. As you proceed, you will want to consider your overall new design and create something that will help pull the entire room together.
