How to Hire an Electrical Contractor

A repair to the electrical system of a house typically requires a professional contractor. Homeowners need to ensure an electrical contractor is qualified because these types of repairs are potentially dangerous. Several personal and professional resources exist for hiring an electrical contractor.

  1. Obtain references for an electrical contractor. These will typically be friends, family members and neighbors. You can also obtain a list of electrical contractors in your area from online searches and the telephone directory.

  2. Ask your references whether they were satisfied with the electrical contractor's work and whether they would use that contractor again. Your references may also be able to describe how the electrical contractor addressed unexpected problems.

  3. Contact at least three electricians directly to obtain written estimates on the repair. The estimate should include a summary of the required service. The primary purpose of obtaining multiple bids is to identify contractors who give estimates that are significantly different from standard market rates. You may need to obtain additional estimates if all three estimates are significantly different from each other.

  4. Ensure the electrical contractors are bonded and licensed. Each state generally requires professional electricians to have a license, and your municipality may require an electrical contractor license that allows the contractor to perform electrical work. Inquire about the length of time the electrical contractor has been in business.

  5. Make your selection based on the estimate, experience and your overall impressions of the electrical contractor. Ensure you have a written contract before the electrical contractor begins work.
