How to Hold a Samurai Sword
The samurai were warriors in ancient Japanese days. Their primary sword of choice was the Katana. As with most things Japanese, the Katana sword has a great deal of tradition, and thus, respect associated with handling and displaying it. A traditional Katana has a curved blade approximately three feet long. In order to properly respect the martial arts discipline, you must handle your Katana with the respect that such a powerful weapon commands.
A proper samurai sword has dimensions such that it is perfectly balanced, as the weight of the blade is the same as the weight of the handle. This is a distinct difference from other swords, and the handler must adjust accordingly.
- Grasp the end of the Katana sword handle in your left hand.
- Using your right hand, grasp the Katana just below the guard. As you grip the sword, ensure that your right hand is positioned at an obtuse angle relative to the blade. The result of this configuration is that the sword extends directly in front of you. This is the optimal fighting stance for the samurai.
- Extend the Katana in front of you, allowing your arms to hang down from your body naturally. As you hold the sword, the handle should be slightly below your waist. The blade should be angled up so that the tip of the sword is level with your chin.
- Relax your grip on the sword. If you wish to handle the Katana in a fluid, and effortless way, you must hold the sword gently, and avoid strangling the Katana as you hold it.
- Practice handling and swinging the sword. As with any skill, it takes repetition in order to properly master it. As you swing the sword, ensure that the power from the swing does not come from the shoulder, but instead with a throwing motion.
