How to Hook Up an Xbox 360 to a Philips Home Theater System

Hooking up an Xbox 360 to a Philips home theater system requires a digital optical cable. If the Xbox 360 does not come with the cable, the user can buy one at an electronics store. Once the devices are connected, the user may need to adjust the Philips television setting in order to use the Xbox 360.

  1. Unpack your Xbox 360 gaming system and read the instruction manual. If the device does not have a digital optical cable, you can shop at a local electronics or computer store to look for one. Find a sales clerk to help you if you cannot locate the right cable to buy for the Philips home theater system.

  2. Turn off your Philips theater television. Turn off the receiver as well and then plug the Xbox 360 power cord into a wall socket that is near your Philips receiver, but do not turn the device on yet. Insert the digital optical cable into the back of the Xbox 360 in the output slot.

  3. Plug the other end of the cable into the Digital Audio input slot on the back of your Philips receiver. Turn on the receiver and television. Power up the Xbox 360 and insert a game disk into the device. Let the Xbox 360 read the game disk which usually only takes a few seconds.

  4. Use your remote control to change the television input setting. Check the Philips instruction manual to determine the right setting to use for a game console. Once you have the correct input setting the Xbox 360 game will display on your Philips television.

  5. Adjust the sound on your home theater television. Make sure that the sound works for each of the speakers you have with the system. Use the remote control to change the setting if necessary so your Xbox 360 game plays sound through all of your Philips speakers.
