How to Horse Ride in the Summer

Horseback riding is a great way to spend time outside and enjoy nature. With the summer months come longer days and more free time to engage in this activity. However, in some climates the temperatures can rise drastically, causing the heat to become potentially dangerous. If you choose to go for a ride on a hot summer day, there are some things to consider.

  1. Pay attention to the temperature and humidity. Use the heat index to determine if it is safe for you to ride. This is calculated by adding the temperature and humidity level together. If this number is under 120, it should still be safe for you to ride. As the heat index rises, your horse can begin to have trouble regulating his body temperature.

  2. Ride in the shade, limit the lengths of your rides and pick optimal riding times. Riding in the morning or later in the evening will help you avoid the hottest times during the day.

  3. Stay well hydrated. Carry a water bottle for yourself and make sure you give your horse plenty of opportunities to stop and have a drink.

  4. Wear sunscreen if you are going to be in the sun. You can also wear long-sleeved shirts and pants made out of breathable fabric to help keep the sun off of you.  Dressing in light colors will also help keep you cooler.

  5. Use lightweight tack in the summer to keep your horse cooler. Thinner saddle pads will dry quicker and will also mean less weight for your horse to carry, making it easier for him.

  6. Use insect repellant. The summer season is a prime time for insects to come out and bite. Make sure that you apply a generous layer of repellant to both you and your horse if you plan on riding at dusk when most mosquitoes come out.

  7. Hose your horse down after your ride. Cold water will help your horse cool off.  Spraying the inside of the hind legs, belly, and neck will help cool the vessels that are bringing heat to these surface areas.

  8. Take precautions riding at night. Because the summer nights cool off but are still warm, many people want to ride at night under the stars. If you choose to participate in nighttime riding, make sure you ride with a friend, stick to well-known trails, and wear reflective clothing.
