How to Identify Child Abuse Signs

Identifying child abuse early is crucial in order to protect the child. It should be noted that the abuse is not always physical. A child can also be suffering from emotional and sexual abuse as well. Once the abuse has been detected it is important to get help for the child so that the healing process can begin.

Physical Abuse Signs

Children that are victims of physical abuse will display frequent scrapes, bruises, and welts on their body. Broken bones will always be explained away as "accidents." Children may be reluctant to participate in certain activities like gym and kick ball at recess because of the fact that they are sore from being beaten. They may also try to conceal the bruises by wearing long sleeves and coats, even in warm weather.

Emotional Abuse Signs

Children that suffer from emotional abuse tend to exhibit extreme behaviors that cover both ends of the spectrum. For instance, they may revert back to infantile behavior such as bed wetting or display adult behavior and act parental toward other children. They can be obedient or stubborn, peaceful or violent. You will notice that the child will become detached emotionally and be reluctant to engage in social activity.

Signs of Neglect

Children who are being neglected at home will show the most obvious signs, such as tangled hair, poor hygiene and malnutrition. You will find them out during all hours of the day and night and they will frequently be absent from school.

Sexual Abuse Signs

Children who are victims of sexual abuse will often show strong opposition or reluctance to be around the individual who is abusing them. They may also discuss improper sexual activity and use inappropriate words that are well beyond their age.
