How to Identify Red Flowers

Flowers come in many types and colors. Identifying red flowers can be a little harder as there are subtle shade differences. This feat can be accomplished with some common sense and investigation skills. Soon you will find yourself a red flower expert. There are some websites dedicated solely to red flower enthusiasts. Using a computer can make identifying your red flower easier. Try to get a sample, picture or sketch the plant and flower.

  1. Take a picture of the flower and plant. Pictures can be used to help in identification. Take the pictures at the right time of day as red is hard to capture on film accurately.  There are many shades of red flowers so the subtle difference in hue could be important to identifying.

  2. Make some notes of where your flower is growing. Some things to look for are any special marks, whether it likes the sunlight, how many petals the flower has, the shape of the flower itself and what might be attracted to the flower. Do you notice any insects, bees or butterflies on or around the plant? Are there any birds that are feeding off of them such as hummingbirds?

  3. Inspect the plant part of the flower. What is the shape of the leaf? Does it grow in stock clumps or just on one stem? If you are artistic, you could sketch a quick drawing or trace the leaf. Take copious notes with details.

  4. Note the environment that the flower is growing in. If it is in a garden, what flowers are close by? Is the soil clay or unusual? Is this a flower growing out in the wild?

  5. Ask the owner of the garden if able. Look up your flower in books that identify by characteristics.

  6. Look your flower up online. If you have a picture you can upload it to your computer.

  7. Join a flower loving website. There are websites for certain types of flowers.

  8. Ask a florist or other plant expert.
